When I bought my 4001, the mute pad was ripped out. I cut a piece of foam out of a sofa cushion and place that under the strings next to the bridge to get the muting effect.

well I've ordered the mute pad and a new top nut from Rosetti UK..

Well guys the bits just arrived today.

Just one more question, the foam pad is about double the width of the original one.

I presume one just cuts it to size ?

It will fit if you force it, but it will fit and work better if you cut it to size.....make sure you have a very sharp utility knife to get a good clean cut.

I cut them in half length-wise and install them as close to the bridge as I can get, they sound better that way, not quite so much damping effect, unless you want it. And the bass stays in tune better. Make sure you clean off the old one good and make sure your aim is good when you apply it to the metal part, I doubt you could reuse it again.

I actually checking out the top nut now and it seems slightly wider than the old one (it overhangs a bit on the fretboard)

I presume that needs filing down ?

Yeah the new nuts are bigger than the old ones and nobody seems to know where to get them, I want one for a 4001 also. I've installed them on 4001's but they just don't look right. the string spacing is ok though. Some people here file them.
