Paul ... you will like the sound of that bass ... I generally open all the volume and tone to 10 ... then back down the neck volume to 9 or 7 ... also on mine the jazz pickup is a reverse wound 1/4 pound seymour duncan jazz pickup ... it is wired into the neck pickup volume control ... so when all the volumes are turned up to 10 it cancels the hum ... back it off a little and you have single coil scream ... or toggle to neck pickup and it sounds like an old 4005 ...

your's should look like this ...
It took me a while to get used to the tighter strings ... but once I did I can play faster and cleaner on an s5 bass .... it sounds great with pick or fingers ... I like to do the Geddy or John Entwhistle typewriter hammer on style ... you get some nice overtones with that approach ... and a real tight focused bass sound with a pick ...

Well I took the red one out today ... it has a different character than the blue one ... a little nastier soundong ... it distorts a little more ... overall very cool and it looks good too ... the blue one produces some clean belltone harmonics that are different than the red one ...
Each Ric Bass seems to have its own unique sound and personality ... the difference is subtle but noticable ...

Jeff: So when you play your Rickenbackers, do you play the red one last?

When I said out ... I meant out of the house ... I have to make the tought decision ... What do I play today ... when I go out I usually take one or two basses ... so today I took the red one out ... it sounded good ...
I may get rid of some of my non-ric basses
