You'll be surprised how much bottom you get when the cap is removed. I have the same type of pu in one of my basses and it sounds much better since I bypassed the cap.

Very nice Marc. The guy who was in the spray booth at that time had it going on!! My F/G fretless is from April 73, and it too looks stunning. Everyone,s taste is individual but I think most would agree this is a great fireglo, along with the guy who was cooking in the early to mid 60,s too...

Tried to hotwire. I guess I don't know what I'm doing. When I did it, it cut out the sound all together.

Things of note, when I put the treble pickup cover back on, I nothiced under the pickup it said FIRE. under the pickguard, on the wood by the pots it says 4001-U and has initials RR.Bu the neck pick up it says EP Neck.

I took pictures of this and will post them on that MSN link I put up.

Congratulations, Marc.
Beautiful bass!!!

As for the writings in the cavity:

R.R.  = Robert Rader. He was the paint booth prep man. His signature meant it was ready to spray.

4001-U  = body shape was 4001, batch U. It does not mean anything but that. The next batch was not necessarily V . It may have been any letter.

The writings in my '72's control cavity are:
9 ARC
R.R.
4001-J

Image

9 ARC = Earl. He was a sander in the paint prep area. He was there for about two years.

***Special thanks to Mark Arnquist for providing the infos.***

Its beautiful Marc. I had a '72 that had the darker reddish edges back in the early '80's. Here's a pic with a real nice sounding '74 mapleglow I had at the same time.Image

I can see the pickguard on the 1972 4001 is not original to it. As for its Mapleglo 'sidekick', clearly there is an extra little something about every 4001 made in 1974.

Paul: Thanks for the info. Not that it's a big deal, but us Ric owners are always curious.

Scott, I like that color on your ex-72.

Right you are Sergio, When I got the '72 I had to replace the guard which was destroyed, and also the bridge PU surround. I ordered the replacement parts directly from Rickenbacker. As far as the '74 goes, yes, she had red side dot markers. Serial on the '72 was LI-948 and on the '74 NE-3072. Wish I had them both back.
