The store said the body was stripped and refinished. A look at the truss rod cavity leads me to guess it was a JG at some time.

Really wanted a full length MOP fretboard but was uneasy of the photo of the neck and bridge.

I still think its a good deal!

From the look of the wood grain it's a good possibility if was jetglo, but then I think it would look great with a medium burgandy refin.

It should be here Wednesday. The "wings" may or may not be real. They do look real pale for walnut but both the other Jan 72 basses I,ve know of, including the one in Toronto (anyone here buy that?) have them. That,s if it is a original jackplate of course... If they are stained on then an B/G eggplant finish could be a possibility. It does look like it was J/G or B/G originally. All this only if everything else is straight of course...I,ll give the scoop on delivery day.

O.K..It,s here and this bass seems to have had/has some issues. There is a bow in the neck starting at about the 7th fret and going right up to the 15th. It peaks around the 10/11th. When depressing the string on the first and last fret there is around a 1.5-2mm difference at this part of the neck from the 3rd and 17th frets and an insanely high action. It looks like the fretboard has popped and been repaired at some time. There is a groove running the length of the neck so that neck radius does not sit flush with the board. The fretboard feels a tiny bit higher. The binding has been removed from the fretboard and so then there is a "step down" effect onto the finger board. So a ridge up to the fretboard and then one down. Feels weird. The rods actually look O.K. without been chewed up etc. Brass nut, replacement bridge, with lots of general wear and tear that I can cope with. The neck issue here is the problem. Your comments welcomed gentlemen...

Maybe someone tried to do something with the rods and thought that they had to pop off the fretboard to get at them. (like some people think you have to do for some reason) And did not replace it properly.

or someone tried to "tweak" the neck like a F_nder neck and thus popped the fretboard.

Well after consulting higher authority in which the neck conclusion is that the board has been off this bass, and the rods are not doing their job causing the bow and along with the feel of the neck due to poor repair and binding being removed means I,m going to pass on this bass. Unless I wake up tomorrow with a different view, there is just too much not right for me, given the price and what it would cost to get it as I want it. If you like a high action then this bass would work for you. It has a great Ric tone, one of the best to my ears, and that does make it more difficult. The search continues...

I came across the ad for this bass and called the shop to inquire. Maybe it's not that big a deal, but I feel like it's pretty disingenuous of them to advertise this bass as "The Ultimate Players Checkerboard 4001!!" and "A fantastic bass that's ready to play!" judging from Wints' experience. I mean, if I shelled out to have it shipped out to me and then found it close to unusable, I would be a little miffed. Just my two cents.
