Thanks for the warm welcome guys.I actually want to amend part of my post yesterday. I now believe Mike Rutherford had only the 4080/12 Rick doubleneck used up to the lamb tour and used another custom 6string/12 string doubleneck during that tour again using the 6 string tuned down an octive as his main bass.He was not the first to do this, Jack Bruce used a Fender VI for a short time with Cream,and both John Lennon and George Harrison played one in the studio during 1968 and 69.

Joseph, the first 6-string basses were made as early as 1959 by Danelectro. Below you can see the one I had and sold last year. Then Hofner came up with the 500/6, and only after that, Fender offered their version. Rickenbacker also made a 6 string bass, the ultra-rare 4005/6.

I believe the "custom" bass he used on the Lamb album and tour was the Microfrets I mentioned earlier. I read an interview with Mike a long time ago (still got it somewhere, but I've got so many guitar mags...if I find it I'll let you know!)where he said he recorded the album with it and really liked it, but I seem to remember him saying it didn't tour too well (could be wrong). I also believe he said he went straight to the Shergold after that (he said the bass was marvelous!)i.e. after Gabriel left.

There is a Jerry Jones copy of a Dan Electro long horn 6 string tic tac bass on Ebay right now. the Jerry Jones basses are supposed to be much better than the Dan Electros were.
Ilan was your a long scale or short scale?
When I bought my first P bass in 1971 the store had about 5 of them all sunburst of course, ahah! in a line on the wall, Fender VI's

It had a short scale, 30". I still have the Fender VI, but I don't have much use for 6-string basses now that my surf trio is defunct.

Ilan, listen to Blonde Redhead and I bet you will rush back to your VI...maybe not...you have a 4003 Shadow...

No need to worry Marc, the VI isn't going anywhere, buy I admit that since I got my Ric I haven't touched my other basses, I'm still in the infatuation phase with the Shadow.

I have 3 Jerry Jones Longhorn basses, one is a BassVI, and they are much higher quality than any Dano. BassVIs are lotsa fun, I used to have a Fender, and in addition to my Jones I have a Gretsch BassVI with a stock Bigsby!

Ronn - yes, the whammy is a major part of the fun with VI's! I have kept the Fender VI because it was much more of a bass than the Dano, which is basically a guitar tuned down an octave.
I would really like to know what a Ric 4005/6 sounds like, with the long scale.
I've never played Jerry Jones instruments but have only heard good things about them.
