Yeah, I always found flatwounds certainly gave that impression, but then I've not touched 'em in years....

FWIW I've heard that vintage-era flatwounds were made differently with a thinner inner core to the string, thus lower tension. Apparently modern ones have a thick beefy core and just a thin flat wrap to give a smooth outer edge.

I put Pyramid Gold flats on my shadow and I could swear it put more tension on its neck....

Chris,
What was on the Shadow B4 the Pyramids?
You already know what a good 4 year old set of broken in Pyramids works and sounds like.
If it was a set of RW's though you may have had markedly different gauges that are making the neck tension adjust itself.

Try TI Jazz Flats. They are extremely low tension strings with a great sound and feel to them.

I have a 4001V63 and a 4003MB and the 4003 has a considerably thicker neck. It took a short adjustment period to get used to it. But now, both basses feel equally comfortable to play, so it's a not an issue for me now.

Yeah The TI's are made like the old ones, very nice strings, great for old 4001's.
I have put Fender med. gauge flatwounds on new 4003's and V63's and those have more tension than barbed wire and the necks handled them fine.
I find that Pyramids have a good amount of tension to them also.

I have TI JR344 nickle rounds guaged: .43 .51 .68 .89 on my '76 4001/4000. They have a nice sort of relaxed feel, and considering the very light guage, sound huge. I think I'm going to start using them on my 4004 as well. I think Jeffery Scott suggested them to me, great advice.
