Wanna save 50 bucks?It's interesting. I really liked that #88 that was auction off a couple of weeks ago(because of the number) but, it had a couple of finish cracks. That went for just under $2K.

Yeah, slightly cheesed off about the auction. I actually bid $2500 and got the old "you have been outbid" thing, so thought highest bid was probably way up there, and gave up. And it went for $2550....

He just lowered his starting bid to $2500. E-mail him, maybe he'll stop the auction for you at that price.

JH has said in the past that the signature series instruments were not ment to be exact copies, but more of a representation. To answer your question about my opinion of the two instruments, I don't see a tonal difference based upon the neck and wing materials, or a neck radius. To my ear they sound exactly the same.

Of course each individual bass has it's own tonal gifts and no two sound exaclty alike. I have no experience with the CS but it seems that it is wired like the rest and the pickups are the standard toaster/horse shoe found on the other VRI models. The vermillion fingerboard may affect the tone differently from a maple or bubinga/rosewood one. All of the sources I have found suggest that vermillion is a species of padouk. Padouk is supposed to have a darker tone than rosewood. Whether that applies to vermillion, I don't know. I suspect the base tone of the CS is nearly the same as the other VRI basses.

William, if you get a chance, check out the C64S. I've raved on and on about this bass. Especially the playability of the neck. It's the smoothest to play especially with the satin finish on the neck IMHO.
I must confess to have never played a CS model. Would love to though.

I've got an EXTREMELY picky ear when it comes to instruments, and my CS definitely sounded different to the V63s I've played. But then as correctly stated, all individual instruments will obviously sound slightly different. Every Rick I've ever owned/played has sounded different acoustically. If you played my 4000 and 4001 side by side unplugged, you'd be hard pushed to say they were the same make of instrument, they sound so different.
My CS sounded more like my 4000, with a slightly nasal upper mid voice. The V63s I've played had a slightly more open, resonant sound, less reflective, and with slightly more "air"; more in the region of my 72 4001 (although not as hollow or soft).
