More than anything my participation here is rumor control when it really should be to impart information not generally known or otherwise available.
When I hear someone perpetuating myths or even embellishing on them, especially when it's going to result in more non-productive work for our customer service staff, I'm going to speak up. I'm not sure why you would find that bizarre.

I have imparted a few good thread stoppers in my time here, especially early on.
I was also thinking about this thread this morning. I have learned a lot from reading Peter's diplomatic responses and his subtle way of changing the tone of some of the threads here that could have easily gotten out of hand. He is a model of diplomacy but gets his meaning across without offending people which is something I admire in people because often I do not have that abilty.

I've run into great resistance at times when trying to set the record straight, for example when someone refers to the Civil War battle between Monitor and Merrimac and I point out that there was no ship named C.S.S Merrimac (the Northern ship Merrimac, sunk by the South, was later raised by the South, refitted as an ironclad, and rechristened C.S.S. Virginia, which was its name when it fought Monitor).

To me, there WAS a Merrimac. There was also a battle of Antietam Creek (at which one of my ancestors fought), but NOT a battle of Sharpsburg

John, I know trivia but not that many details of the Civil War, so I miss the full meaning of that statement!
Although I had an ancestor (my maternal great-great-great-grandfather) who fought in the Revolutionary War, I'm not familiar with what my ancestors did during the Civil War, although I'm pretty sure they all (both sides of the family) were living in the North at the time. Time to get the family histories out and read them again!

When I was in grade [a.k.a. elementary] school back in the politcally incorrect late '50s to early '60s, it was called the Civil War.
Of course, "civil war" is a great oxymoron!

HEY!! I live only a couple of minutes from where the Battle of Sharps----, I mean Antietam was fought!! I've even got a couple of bullets that I found....nearby.
