On the same subject but not a pedal...I did a side by side comparison of a Vintage Fender Super Reverb and a Pro Reverb with a couple vintage Ampeg Combos awhile ago.
And I have to say that the Reverb on the Ampegs are different and quite lush. I think the Magnatones had a similar reverb. As far as Pedals for reverb - I really haven't used them.
I've always had combo's mostly Fenders with Reverb. Currently a Blackface Deluxe Reverb and it works fine for my use.

Oh I did own a Quadraverb years ago when I was using a Fender Bassman Amp. It worked pretty good but I had to turn off the Noise gate. I don't like the way a noise gate effects the signal. Maybe I just didn't know how to tweek it right.
...went in to buy a 52' Tele and walked out with a 360 Jetglo...

I don't think I would get the Sole-mate or the Reverbamate now, because I don't really need anything like that for the moment, but it would have been quite easy for them to make a model that has a potentiometer that lets you mix in how much reverb sound you want in the main output (up to 100%) and a dry output, and they would have had a model which can handle different situations, including stereo.

There are also solid-state kits available for the electronic part of a reverb to make your own with a reverb tank (reverb tanks are not that expensive).

I tend to agree about the Ampegs, they have a very thick reverb sound, I would describe it as a heavy blues reverb, while the Fenders sound more like thinner surf reverb, but of course you can use whatever amp for whatever style.

Fender outboard unit is the ONE end of story for me...if you must have a pedal...the Holy Grail is a good unit....

The Maggie reverb is due to the way they're wired, I've heard it said "capacitor-driven" though I don't know what that means. The Maggie tanks are smaller than Fender units, too. I re-did the tank on one of my Maggies with a larger Fender unit and grafted the chokes from the old tank to the Fender tank...it's fiddly work with tweezers, but the result is the best in-amp reverb I've ever heard.

But George is right--it's the Fender standalone circuitry that makes that wonderful "water-drop" percussiony liquid sound so beloved by surf guitarists.
