If this works, it's a link to where I got the "66" info. You have to scroll down a little.

By the way, my '65 Jazz Bass has the oval tuners too.

The features of this era of fender basses are cool. Original late 60's jazz's are getting expensive! If fender would only reissue a model jazz just like McCartney's.

Nice photos and axes Kevin!
Also of note; Your photo of Paul playing the Fender Jazz bass in the studio clearly shows he's not using a pick. I read a thread here somewhere where some were saying he ALWAYS played with a pick.
Maybe you could drop that thread a link to your photo of Paul emulating our Yankee style.
(personally I think he did a lot of finger playing in the studio).

My guess is he was about 50/50 on playing with picks and fingers, from pictures and the sound produced.

I play with fingers on my Jazz 100% of the time, picks on Hofners, and split 50/50 on my Rick, all due to the string spacing.

Not that I'm anything like Sir Paul!

They are not actually playing in the promo films on the Anthology DVD's, but in most cases Paul is just playing with his fingers. I think it's in the Beatle Gear book, that Paul says he plays with a pick when it's a very important bass part (my words). Of course he didn't have many parts that were not important!

Paul said in a recent interview, he would play alot with his fingers, to get a bassier sound. But since he was first a guitar player, he would usually use a pick at big important gigs(like Shae Stadium, Ed Sullivan) as a kind of a crutch.
