To answer the question... I am a player. I am a one guitar man. I have played the same 75 4001jg since the mid eighties..(used, all stock) with the aim to "make it". .and I'm still working at it because it is so much fun. My "new" backup is a Frankenbass assemblage of assorted guitars.

Wait...scratch that... in a few days I should get my new-used 1990 4003 with all black trim and hardware I just ordered from The-Music-Connection.com

I'd like to be a collector, but how much money can you spend on guitars? It's like a black hole. Everytime I buy a Rick, another one has to go (tears in my eyes). Currently I own two 650s and I'm much pleased to be not one of those Les-Paul-players or Strat or something. I use the guitars mainly for recording these days. I'd like to have a RIC bass, a 4003 in White or Tourqouise...

some guy said only a few types of basses were "collectable". He's wrong. Any guitar you own is collected-therefore I am a collector. Even if I can't keep up with the Squire or McCartney CDs, I'm playing-so I'm a player.

So I'm a little bit of both...

I was in Mars Music last week and noticed a just-arrived Rick bass. I asked one of the salespeople if they sell many, and he said, "no...it's really just a collectors guitar -- but it does sound nice". Gee, ya think? Moron.

I've always been a player & a one guitar man.
I started out at about 15 getting carted all around the 'burbs by bands with guys much older than me doing paid gigs bout 1978.
Rick basses were going in the local paper for $250-300, so I and my girlfriend scraped up enough to do the rounds one Sunday in 1981.
First stop was the cheapest, we go in and meet a guy with a busted hand in plaster, he opens the case and there was this unusual Rick. No triangles, no binding, fireglo and it looked old.
I had played one 4001 brand new in the shop but this one felt different, sorta easier to play.
So anyway I grabed it there and then and played it for years.
Who'd a thought the very Rick this kid bought back then would be a 1964 4001S.
Now I'm a collector as well.

Bebe: Great story and great find..I once was offered a 1966 360/12 in Fireglo for $325.00 (no case--but who cares??) someone beat me to it. Oh well...
I guess what you play/buy could have a lot to with where you fit, whether you planned it or not!! Good Luck.

Now I know what it is I'll have to get a full set.
Y'know 1993, 1995, 1996(ouch those prices), 1997 or 1998(I've steeled myself to only having one or the other!)
Then there's the F types, I'd really like to have one of those....O yeah I forget, another must is a checkered binding 4001.
Collecting is great fun.

Bebe: I was fortunate enough to come across a 1972 4001 recently that has all of the cool features one would find on a bass of an earlier vintage(i.e. checkerboard binding, crushed-pearl inlay, etc..) and is left-handed as well (lucky for me.) I play it quite regularly on gigs and it is great to play out--the sound is incredible. I would like to have a lefty 4001S from the 60's, but as far as I know Sir Paul has the only one made. You have quite a task ahead of you to complete your goal of collecting Rose-Morris Rickenbackers. Let the quest begin !!!!!

Are you sure about only one lefty 4001s? I thought I read somewhere that there was
another. What a find that would be.

Let me know when you do!!! In my travels I haven't seen many at all, period. Hopefully one day more of them will surface.

I'm a collector and a player (if you count sitting on my living room couch torturing my wife, playing!). I'm into Gibson acoustics, although my 12 string is a '65 Martin. I used to have a Gretsch collection, but one by one I sold or traded them. Now I have my first Ric - a '65 370/6 in Mapleglo. I love it - I want MORE!

I'm a player, myself. I don't have the patience to just sit and stare at a guitar behind the glass case, you know?

If I had the money, I'd have all kinds of makes and models of guitars, etc. but I'd definitely play and record with them all.
