here's something about pots off the internet ...

250K vs. 500K
Generally, 500K-ohm pots are used with humbuckers and 250Ks are used with single-coil pickups. 25K pots are used for active systems.

You can use any value you like, but a 250K will give a slightly warmer tone than a 500K pot. The 250K pot bleeds off (attenuates) some of the high frequencies to ground. A 1Meg-ohm pot will attenuate even less than a 500K pot, so if you want to hear your guitar "wide open" you may want to try one.

$56 is not a major investment to make this guitar way more flexible. IMHO Image I was worried they might be a C-note apiece...

Now, is this a mod that a novice can do themselves? I do my own set up, and have a reasonable mechanical aptitude...I also know some decent soldering techniques...so will I be able to do this mod myself when I finally get my 4004 (hoping to have the cash up by the end of the year)?

Does anyone actually use a tone control these days? I can't say that I do, unless it is on an active bass/guitar. Simply changing to 2 volume controls would work for me.

Jeff R - that's the axe you recently picked up? Sweet! Image

Jeff U - I use the tones a lot. In fact, since I started to use my 4001 again I've found that the lack of tone control on both PU's annoying on my J-Bass, and the Jazz used to be my main guitar for a LONG time.

Ed,
I have a solution for your Jazz Bass blues! I am trying to sell a virtually new American Vintage '62 Jazz Bass, the one with the stack knob controls. Volume and tone for each pickup. Interested?

eeeehehhhhhhh......

Jeff (S) (too many Jeff's here! Image )...Damn, I wish I had cash to toss around on fiddles...especially since I'd have NO PROBLEM with the "other half". But I've committed in my mind to saving up for a new 4004.

How much? Image

$800.00 plus shipping to my Rickenbrothers. This is one you would surely like. I am sure we could work something out.

I still have a weakness for nice jazz basses. That one is very pretty Jeff. Scott: I am glad that mod worked out so well for you. I will have to do mine after I finish my other projects. :-)

Ted, I am very happy with the mod. And forgive me for not thanking you for your gracious advice on the subject a while back.

That is the beautiful thing about the forum. If you have a question, there is always someone within our "Circle of Knowledge", that knows how to do it, or has done it, or knows someone they can get in touch with that can.

This place is great. Image

No thanks required! It is just cool when something like that works out so well. I am really eager to do mine now.
