It was on my porch when I arrived home from work. It was in the low-mid 30's here today.
I unpacked it and quickly open/shut the case and got a surface temp on the bass inside which read 57 degrees.....so I checked again with the same results. I figured that was plenty safe enough so apparently this thread was all for nothing

I don't understand how they would simply leave a package on someone's porch.

Personally I'd be really ****** if they left it there. Anyone could just take it not knowing what it is, figuring its of value since its big.
When I got it they left the note saying they would deliver it the next day, but a quick call to the warehouse gave me the estimated arrival of the truck there so I went and picked it up myself a day before I should've gotten it

This thread was NOT for nothing. We aired some good information and learned a lot about thermal shock as it relates to our instruments.

Brian, you didn't mention who the delivery service was, FedEx, USPS or UPS. I know the FedEx requires a signature unless you check the option out box. USPS probably not for such a large and valuable package.

Probably UPS, huh? I don't know their official position on this, but it has always seemed to be at the driver's option whether to leave the box or leave the note.

I always have my guitars delivered to my office. Then I leave them overnight unopened and go home. Then I try to sleep...

The service was UPS. I really don't have an issue with them leaving it. There are alot of people around here that keep an eye on things plus good patrolling by the police (and they know who lives in my house). I know anything can happen anywhere but I feel it was safe for him to leave it where he did. Plus I believe my UPS man knows my schedule and it probably wasn't on my porch for more than 30 minutes (he generally delivers around the same time of the day).

I believe it is at the discretion of the driver for UPS whether to leave a package unattended or not.

I will say that if my 4004LK is ever finished that I will either take the day off of work when it gets delivered or I will drive to North Carolina and pick it up....likely I'm in for a drive.

I thought I might chime in on this for the opposite reason. If you have a warm instrument and decide to open the case outside when it is cold, you can watch the finish check before your eyes. I have a friend who had done this. It's a hard lesson to learn. So be careful if you need to go through customs or someplace that will require you to open your case. My guess is that the finish contracts instantly as the wood doesn't. The wood and the finish have different coefficients.
