I'd have to second Mr. Hall, I have had nothing but nightmares with UPS (try 4 out of 5, and a 2 month claim!) and FedEx has been perfect.
When Ted gets a bass shipped to him, does it go TedEx?
"They make great f***'n basses". - Lemmy, NAMM 2009
I,ve gone the Fed Ex route this week after reading about U.P.S. To hopefully be real safe I sent my Ric ATA case to the seller in order to protect this bass as much as possible. I wanted to pick it up in person as it would be a real shame if anything happened in transit, but I,ve got my fingers crossed...
Now comes the hard wait....
If you were to accidentally trip on your case, or get home drunk and step on it, teh silver case would crack, and it would be as if you were stepping on the rick itself. The case offers probably as much protection as a gig bag. The SKB case, on the other hand... NOw that's a real case.
My opinion is it is like a lottery. I have not had any problems with shipping re vintage (silver or black) cases, but then have had less experience with them. With SKB cases I had one arrive that the case was cracked, but the guitar ok. I have also had one where the bass was damaged but no visable case damage, although it doesn't hold the instrument very snugly anymore. Others have arrived ok. Supprisingly instruments shipped with no case (in gig bags), have all arrived ok. I think the best thing is to get the seller to wrap case and instrument well in "bubble wrap" or buy one of the very sturdy shipping type cases and hope for a safe arrival.
I too think the SKB cases are much more sturdy, and they don't show the scrapes like silver does. My old black form-fitting cases are probably all scraped up like my silver cases were but don't show it any way near as much. I've shipped Rics to Perú and back several times on planes in the old form-fitting black cases and SKB cases and have had no problems besides the fact they shipped one to Brazil by mistake and it was lost for a week.
