There was a time when bass players were as proud of their own sound as guitar players are, can you imagine the average guitar player playing through a DI? I don't lug an SVT around to then send a dry DI signal to a soundman who has his own ideas about what a good bass sound is. If you send a mic'ed signal from an SVT it's ALL there, all the bottom you could want and all the top and all the meat of the midrange. If all soundmen were like the guy in that article (only use the DI to augment the mic'ed sound) I'd have no problem with DI's but I've worked with too many opinionated sound men in my life.

I tend to agree with popular opinion here. If I have to Mic my rig (SVT5Pro and PR8X10) I prefer either a 57 or 421. That's just me. I don't particularly care for DI simply because it gives control over to the sound man. That's not nesessarily a bad thing, but it does take some of the control out of your hands. However, having said that, there are times when it is simply not practical to mic your equipment and so it goes....

when I play out and there is a house PA and sound man I tell them my xlr out is not working and I bring my own sm57 ... so he HAS to connect his cable to my mike ...
