Re "unusual" features; It's obviously a model made when Ric transitioned between the 4001/4003. There's probably a lot more basses like this than you realise, just not many in MG...

Neck/Spine - My 1982 4003 has a Maple skunkstripe; obviously a transition example between the walnut skunk and none at all.

TRC - Could be a replacement.

R-o-S - Unfamiliar with this period, optional extra on order...?

To be honest, I don't see why he'd wanna respond, Mr Hall is a Shadow man. Image

I was almost a Shadow man too, but I bought this instead. Sorry, Chris.

And if Mr. Hall is indeed a Shadow man, why did he custom order this 4003S I now have in my possesion?! HUH?! =)

Most but not all TRC's had model numbers.

"I was almost a Shadow man too, but I bought this instead. Sorry, Chris."

You're:

1.) A sucker for the 'S' Factor.
2.) Daft.. Image

"..(..).. why did he custom order this 4003S I now have in my possesion?! HUH?!"

Eh? I'm lost with all this John Hall business, Mitch mate...

WHAAA?!!! The "S" doesn't stand for "SHADOW?!"

I am with you on wanting to know about the bass. So far, it is just an unusual variant. That is really all we know about it. As someone has already pointed out, other than the fact that he owns the company, any connection between this bass and John Hall is merely conjecture. Maybe John can shed some light on the origins of the bass but calling him out to do so might be a little annoying to him, no? When it comes to asking questions of him, it is best to proceed as politely as possible. IMHO

BTW The S factor is as in 4001S, i.e. no binding, dot inlays, mono.

I AM a sucker for the "S" factor (I was kidding about it meaning "Shadow.)

I am also annoying, but politely so. =)

Chances are Ted, you'll get a detailed, private response!

Thanks, Mitch. Your bass is very interesting to me and I am more than a little curious to find out how it came to be. Please understand that I don't mean to play the part of Miss Manner or anything. :-) I have had more than my share of indescretions around here. I am really speaking out of turn here but regardless of the purpose, things are a lot happier on the forum when gauntlets are not being thrown in John's direction.

Ted - If you're worrying about offending me, DON'T. I'm NEVER offended by anyone, and sometimes that makes my personal skills a little callous. THAT and the impersonality of text messages can make me seem arrogant or pushy.

When all I really wanna do is to sit at the feet of the masters and bask in the glow of their infinite wisdom, knowledge and experience! (Even if it means I have to push someone out of line to do it!) =)

OK. Therapy session over. Time for a Fresca.

Fresca? I have not had one of those since the 60's. Is it still made?

Yes. I have it available to me in my pop machine at work.

Wow.
Pop, you must be from the mid west. Round here they call Fresca or any carbonated drink like that "soda" or "tonic" Add the New Englander accent in there of course.

And yes we have Fresca here too in the NE. Good for mixers! Image

I've had many debates about pop vs. soda. I live in central IL. It seems to me that the more north you go, toward Chicago and Rockford, pop dominates. The farther south, soda reigns. However, my father from southern IL uses the term sodi - as in sodi-pop
(the things I think about on a Fri afternoon)

Fresca has never been the same since they took cyclimates(some kinda space age sweetner)off the market. I always think of Ted Knight offering one to Danny in Caddy Shack..."How 'bout a Fresca?!?"

Weren't cyclimates linked with liver cancer or some similar gastro malady?
