There is a permanent, heat-proof, somewhat higher tech material that I use for potting. It's a soft polyurethane with just the right resonance to work, and it's permanent and protective to boot.
It's called F-25, and it's pretty good--low odor, easy to mix, not too toxic (non-toxic once cured). It's only available in pints, however, so you'd have to pot a lot of stuff to make it worthwhile. But it works very well to cancel resonances.
