The lads from "The Young Ones" did a subtle (in typical English fashion) riff on the Spinal Tap idea, back in the mid-80s. It was, I believe, a Channel Four production, titled "Bad News". The first production was alright, but the second one, "More Bad News", is very funny, and, I would argue, more spot on than Spinal Tap.
When I saw Spinal Tap back in 1984, I chuckled a couple of times (though the girlfriend in the film who kinda takes over the band hit too close to home - similar to our lead guitarists' know-it-all girlfriend). It was only after leaving the theatre that the bunch of us began to laugh while recounting the gags.
So, both Spinal Tap and More Bad News are fine fare.

HELLO, CASTLE DONNINGTON!
Lemmy is a crackup in More Bad News!
Have you heard the Bad News LP? It's full of stuff that wasn't in either TV production, including a really, superbly AWFUL cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, actually featuring the actual Brian May! I'm always impressed by someone who can play really badly on purpose, and make it sound genuine!
There's also a Christmas song, "Cashing In On Christmas". The whole thing is a riot!

A friend of mine bought the Bad News LP back when it was new, and it is hilarious - much funnier than the tv productions in my opinion. To this day we still quote stuff off it and have a laugh. Somewhere here I even still have the video clip of Bohemian Rhapsody, which I taped off tv. If I ever found it on CD I'd snap it up in a flash. Is it even released on CD?
