I know when we made fretless models in the early to mid 70's we drilled every fret slot with a side marker dot and there were no fret slots. So the neck on this one looks stock. Oh and most of them had red side dots for some odd reason. We also made a few set neck models too.

Do you remember making any fretless 4001S? I don't recall that ever being an option. Of course, back then it was possible to get custom work done at the factory.

If you wanted an s model and you wanted a fretless they were all special order all fretlesses is what i mean .i don't think its fake or been done i would think its factory,if he's the original owner he should have paper work with it,I would think the warranty was or is different for the fret board [if you put round wounds on it and chewed up the board it probably wasn't covered]
