Ted, what naming convention to you use on your network?

I owned + gigged for around 1 1/2 years.

But... my Dad is a pro player, he knows a lot of other Ric players on the circuit. Apparently one of his mates bought it new in 1972 from a New York dealer.

He kept it for 20 years then sold it on. 11 years later, I walk into a shop, trade the odd 4003, Strat and Marshall amp for it. About 2 1/2 months ago, I sold it. She's a great bass, but I get more from a Cheyenne II. I slap, you see.

She wasn't best suited for slapping, I can tell you now!

I have some video from a small gig playing her, she sounded amazing - VERY Chris Squire.

Right now I own an old 80s 4003, JG - and my main player, the Cii which you have seen.

I had an MG 4001v63 for a little bit, and just last year I used a Jetglo 4003S for around 10 gigs. Super lil' bass.

Thanks, I liked it a lot, but for me on looks and uniqueness you cant beat a 4004 or a 2060, or maybe even a 3001 too!

Henny do u think 4003's are a lot better than 4001's, in performance and sound? In your experience anyway! Do you still have the 4003S?

No way. They're good, but I've never liked the 4003's neck, and the dreadfully horrible-looking inlays. They have decent pickups, though.

The 4003S belonged to a friend of mine, he went away to New Zealand. He said, "Eh, have this for a bit!" So, OK I said, and that was that.

I have used lots of weird names for computers over the years but there is usually a theme or some convoluted reason for the name. I did a group of related servers once that were named Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. I once named a server "Twinkie" so the junk food addicted owner would remember to change the backup tapes.

Have you named any of them HAL yet?

that name is reserved for basses with "Active Electronics"

and I'll take a 4003 over a 4001 any day of the week ... I have those old truss rods and weak pickups ...

No, I have never used HAL. You would think that to be a more common name though.

I used to name my guitars after what I paid for them. So I had 650, 750, 4100, 1200, etc. This is not so weird. Some of Gibson's model numbers reflected their original price. An ES150 was an Electric Spanish (ES) that listed for $150. An ES345 cost $10 more than an ES335, etc.

I call them, my 72 my 81, my 96, etc. Or my Green one, my blue one, names are for dogs. haha!
