Mick, that's my favorite album of theirs, It just kind of connected with me more than Tim or Pleased to Meet Me, although those are great as well. Anything else you remember about the show, I'd like to hear it. Image

Let's see, it was held a club in Ottawa called Barrymores...and old movie theater from the 1920's, hence the day. The place was packed, even for staid old Ottawa, and the Goo Goo Dolls opened up, back when they were not nearly as limp as they are now.

The 'Mats were in fine form and I remember when Westerberg sang the line about sounding like some guy from Canada, the place went nuts...but then again, most of us Canadians have an inferiority complex, and any mention of us by our American brothers always goes over like that.

Side point: I still have the media backstage pass for that gig, as the record company had set up a one-on-one interview with me and Westerberg for the university station in town. Of course, he never showed...though I later learned at that time he was busy "getting to know" a couple of cute girls that I was friends with.

Hey, good for him. Rock and roll and all that stuff. Didn't really know what to ask him, anyhow. Most interviews are a waste-of-time for both parties.

I still have my November 1984 Bangles interview and July 1983 Bill Berry interview on tape, and every so often I make my wife listen to them. Lucky her. But you know, I never did ask about the Rickenbacker connection.

Though...come to think of it, that Bangles concert, when they opened for Cindy Lauper at the Civic Centre in Ottawa, that was the first time I actually physically saw a Rickenbacker close-up. All the press wanted to talk with Lauper, so I had no problem getting media credentials to talk wtih the Bangles. Didn't really know what to ask them either, except we agreed how great "Pure Pop For Now People/Jesus Of Cool" by Nick Lowe was.

And does he (Lowe) not hold a Rickenbacker bass on one of the photos of that album?

I still like "Let It Be" as my favourite Replacements album, though earlier songs like Dope Smoking Moron and Goddamn Job...and If Only You Were Lonely...are great.

That's it. Apparently, I remember nothing of importance, except my telephone number back in Grade Three in Calgary.
How much!?!
