This is so far out of left field....

Did any of the 'Royal Guardsmen' play a Rickenbacker when 'Snoopy vs. The Red Baron' was recorded? Image

Wow - I actually saw the Royal Guardsmen in a live concert - and of course, they played Snoopy & the Red Baron. But I don't recall what guitars they used - sorry.

Never mind, Mark. Was seeing them a good or bad thing?

Time for a hint guys. He was a pilot, played a Rickenbacker and is in Richard Smith's book.

Um, Ricky Nelson? He flew in more ways than one, too.

Well, I know it wasn't George Shearing.

But I'm thinking you don't mean famous as a pilot, just famous in any sense. Therefore, it has to be Jim Reeves.

Yes John, famous in any sense.

Again your responses go well beyond the thoughts underlying my initial question and I like your answers better than mine. I had no idea that there were so many musicians who were also pilots.

John Denver would be another but no Rickenbacker connection to my knowledge.

How about we take this thread in another direction as well.

As a pilot and general aviation enthusiast, I'd like to know how many of you are also pilots and what you fly.

Through the years I've noted a very large number of pilots among Rickenbacker owners, seemingly a greater number than the general population stat might suggest.

Doctors and lawyers seem to buy Gibsons . . .

Well... I'm not a pilot, but I do tell them where to go. I'm an air traffic control supervisor and I've been talking to airplanes for over 25 years, many of which were spent at SNA (John Wayne / Santa Ana Airport).

Do you need a tour of SoCal Approach, John?

Wow, then no doubt I've already spoken to you many times at either SNA or Coast/SoCal Approach! More often than not I fly off the roof of the Centreport/Helistream/Tridair building.

Indeed, I'd love to visit. In the late 80' I visited the old Tracon at El Toro since I have an appreciation of antiques but it'd be great to see the new place!

My father was a pilot. He flew his little Piper Cherokee off of a landing strip he had on our farm. He'd occasionally do flying for various ag companies that wanted to take over head photos of fields or various plots. He had a small acrylic window installed on the bottom of the floor so the cameramen could just look down instead of banking the plane and shooting out the side window.
