Even though the Kay appears in the Juniors Farm lip sync'd video, it sounds to me like it was recorded with the Rickenbacker. The only other appearance of the Kay that I know of is in the Ebony and Ivory video. That was probably recorded with the Yamaha but the Kay was used in the video because it's black with a white pickguard.

I agree with you that the Ric was used on juniors farm without a doubt, But I would belive that Macca did use the Kay on Ebony and Ivory, I played a couple of old Kay basses back in November at the great american guitar show, and without even trying playing through the little combo amp that the dealer had, the sound and tone were dead on, the only reason I didnt purchase any of the Kay basses that day, the gut wanted way to much for the Kay's and they were pretty beat up but the sound was there, eventually I will land one of these basses, but all was not lost, I wound up buying a German made Hofner club bass from Chris Clayton (Pick of the Ricks) had I brought enough money with me, another guy had a mint Fender 50th anniversary Precision that was to die for, when that show comes around again, if that 50th anniversary is still available, im snagging it.

BTW, the thread title isn't accurate. Two years ago McCartney's guitar tech has told me that he still plays the old Ric from time to time.

Yes, I saw your interview. Excellent work asking about the 4001! It's just that the 4001 hasn't been seen live since 1987 (i think) and not on film since 1997's "The World Tonight". Did you see it in the flesh? It was reported in Guitar Player a few years back that he still tours with the bass. Was it in his rig?

So, to say he stopped using the 4001 is fairly accurate. At least because we have not seen it in any capacity (given our access) in 14 years. Compared to how often he is seen with the Hofner, it could've been titled "Why has Paul's 4001 gone the way of Jimmy Hoffa?"

No I didn't and it wasn't in his rig. The last time I saw it on film was two months ago, in an ITV documentary (see this thread). Or it could be his C64. But anyway it was a Ric and someone thought it should be outside the case and behind Paul.

I saw the tv show (possibly south bank or something) where Costello and Macca were working on the album and the subject of bringing back the Hofner came up.
I think it was really a vibe or image thing.
Someone like PM could play his album with a home made bass and come up with the goods.
Just needed a little change of scenery and stuck with it as mentioned earlier for pushing the ex Beatle image.
Prior to that,
I think by the time punk came along Ricks were seen as either an ironic statement by guys like the Pistols who used current ones or as a bass used by prog and mor dinosaurs who had used them like a Rock icon for years.
I remember a few guys trading in good Ricks for WAL Fender BCRich (Chic influence) and so on because the look was out at the time.
So Macca followed the trend and went for the Yamaha.
I saw Wings at Manchester Apollo in 79 when Paul used the Yamaha throughout.
Granada Reports did an interview and showed some footage of the band onstage doing Every Night.
At the time I owned the Maurice Gibb bass and used a Fender Bassman 100 stack and I was hoping the Rick would be there.
Macca had about 4 Bassman 4x12s onstage!
But no sign of the Rick.
I did see it in the early 70s at a Wings concert at the Hardrock in Manchester.
Thats nothing to do with HardRock cafe by the way.
The venue is noe B+Q hardware on Greatstone Road Stretford just next door to Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

I still think that a bit of a nudge in the right direction will bring Paul around to using a Rick bass again.
Possibly a totally accurate in all departments re-make of his bass (in Fireglo) as a special one off for him would send his mind back to the days when they was Fab.

Macca can do no wrong for me musically after all the great things he has done and he can play a uke bass if he wants we still have the memories.

If Macca's 4004 is as light as Joey's trans blue 4004, it shouldn't make his shoulder ache at all; Joey's is so light it feels like a thinline or hollowbody bass.

With the Macca connection, I'm surprised the BB1200 wasn't/isn't more popular.
