There is a story that goes with it....

I found this old bass in the back of a local music store about 20 years ago. I would periodically ask the store owner if he would sell it. The answer was always no. Anyway, fast forward 20 years and the owner steps away and lets his son run the store. I asked the son if he would sell it and he asks what I would pay for it. There was never a jack plate on it so I asked if I could take it for a couple of days to try to date it and more thoroughly evaluate it. So, I took some photographs and talked to some experts and all agreed it was a late '67 or early '68. I am claiming '67. Anyway, I brought the bass back to him and told him I would have a number for him by the end of the week. When I returned to the store, I saw the bass had been stripped of everything! The jerk had realized there was a lot of value in all the parts and sold just the the parts to a vintage dealer. Even though I was ticked-off, I still bought the carcass.

So, I bought new (or in some cases 70's era) parts, sent it all to Paul W. and waited. Here are some before shots:

What an ***.

You should have pretended not to see the bass when you returned and told him your best bid was $30,000.

Thanks for the pics. I remember when Paul re-did that one.

Yes, Bob, thanks - very nice. What era is the bridge pickup and how does this bass sound. Those old nickle tuners have a nice patina on them. Jeff T was looking for some.

If she likes Led Zeppelin because you listen to it, is it in vogue with the "new generation?"
That would just prove she has great taste in music!
Her favorite song is Smoke on the Water, and walks around the house singing "her" song.
Dat Dat Daaaa, Dat Dat Da-Daaaa!

Nice bass, Bob! Looks nice, but why was it re-finned? Structural issues?

It was refinished due to some cosmetic issues and mostly because I wanted to give it a new lease on life - new hardware, new finish, new life. Once it had been stripped of it's original hardware, I had no interest in spending a lifetime (and a small fortune) trying to restore it. It is a great player now.

Pickups are both new.

That sounds very sensible, really.

johnallg wrote:Thanks to all for the measurements - they have been added to the database. Since Jeff Scott's friend was kind enough to give RRF an FTP site, I now have the database located there. That place will now be the repository, and the one on my site will be gone.

Tony, I wish I could make SERF.... just too much going on at work to be able to go. Oh, and there is a section on 4004 basses.

I hear ya John, but still....I wish you were coming. :(

I'll be taking all my basses out for a cleaning over the weekend, I'll be able to add a few to the record.
