I have an old Lollar HS (I got from a fellow Forumite) and I must say I DO like it... I have it on my '74 4001 - very nice and warm! I'm glad this has been settled and that it will be available to the public again.

I picked up one of the new Lollar HS builds, and installed it in my 4003 today. Jason builds these himself.

I'm still playing with pup adjustment as the HS is much weaker (I have a custom harness by Dane Wilder, with 250/500 pots, and I soldered in a .0047 cap too). I had to lower the toaster significantly...to around 5/32nds from the string underside, and back the toaster volume down about 20 deg. for a near match in volume. Still tweaking....

But, I can already ascertain a more upper mid harmonic focus with a real HS.

The only Lollar HS PU I saw in the "steel" was the first, flexible magnet sandwich one; it was in a '67 (?) 4001S that Ken Swearingen had/has. I don't recall if we plugged the bass in so I cannot comment on tone, however I was NOT impressed by the flexing of the shoes like they were springs.

I played that bass through an amp at MARF I thru an SVT, and I thought it sounded really good.

That SVT was Chris Pappas' Skunkworks, right? I remember him bringing that amp.

Not sure what the 'sandwich' style is.... This is what it looks like -

It does sound good, regardless of what it is.

That's a "sandwich". The shoes are laminated (I think a rubberised magnet between two metal layers). The newer Lollar shoes are one piece of metal.

Cool! Thanks Evan! Now I know! I'm not too good at knowing the names for things but I do know what I like... and I DO like it! It has a very warm sound to it.
