So who has the other 21 fret 4001? Is it you, me and Gene? What year is the other bass?

That's right. Gene's was made in February 1971, if I remember correctly.

There are a few more 21 fret basses out there...The fireglo that went on e bay a few months ago...(anyone here know who bought that one??) Over at the a.g.r. someone had a M/G Jan 71 #015..not far from your bass Grant...Back in the U.K. there,s a Nov 70 in M/G too...( I just missed that one..) Given the relatively low production at that point in time Ric might have made about how many??...25 or 50 would have been a nice small experimental number..which leads us to the LK...How many have been made now? Are they ever going to see a full production run? These could be very collectible from a point of so few actually being made..and yes, what do they sound like....

Does anyone have a 1971 4001 that isn't a 21 fret model?? Were the 21 fret models just experimental variations? So many questions...sigh

Hi. Sorry. Your 21 fret 4001 had totally slipped my mind.
To recap: mine is from November 1970, Grant's is from January 1971, Gene's is from February 1971 and yours is from November 1971.
Andrew: I have the serial number of one of the 21 fret 4001s you mention. I'll be sure to look for it in my e-mail archive and let you know.
Grant: Yes, there are many 1971 20 fret 4001s out there. As for 21 fret 4001s being experimental variations, yes, I guess you could call them that.
What do they sound like, some of you ask? Well, I don't call a 21 fret 4001 the ultimate Rickenbacker bass on account of looks alone...

I had almost forgot about mine as well, it's been in the shop for a year now. But I'm hoping that my luthier will have it done before I'm 64.

The above are two of my six Rick basses. The pickguard on the 1970 21 fret 4001 is not Rickenbacker-made.
Serial number on the Burgundyglo 4001 is TG 2690.
