Here's another Rick that I recently finished and which will make its home in the Great White North. (Cue the MacKenzie Brothers, hey.)

It's a '72 4001 that was originally Mapleglo, and has been redone in a gorgeous AZ, It needed very little prep work once the original finish was stripped.

Here it is in the spray booth, under fluorescent lighting:

Absolutely.

The Blue Boy 4001 behind the AZ in the music room is also a '72, but it's a carcass that was partially restored with current parts (tailpiece and horseshoe, among others) and partially with original stuff like the Grover tuners. Of course BB was not original for '72, and neither were gold guards and TRC.

Lastly, here's a '68 365 NS that got a neck reset. It was in cosmetically excellent condition. I removed the back (managed to keep the checkerboard intact) and neck, cleaned out the pocket and neck mortise (the part that fits into the pocket), and reglued the parts after setting them up on my granite surface plate. (I know that's overkill, but it was cheap and is super-accurate!). Then I reglued the back, rebound it over the old checkerboard, scraped and sanded the sides, and sprayed tinted and clear varnish on the sides and back, to match the original finish on the top and neck. The new binding was also tinted to match the neck binding. It was critical to the owner that the patina match all around, so the reset would be undetectable.

Nothing else was touched or modded; every last screw went back into its original hole. Restrung with new Rick strings.













This was a similar project to the 360 that I did for a customwer in Australia earlier this year, but the Australian one had much more patina!

Of course, that's how the holes in the surround lined up with the holes in the body. I didn't want to drill new holes, as it will eventually get a proper surround.

I am glad it is only temporary, it always looks so odd when basses show up on ebay like that. Unless they are from South of the Equator.

Paul, these all look great! I'm excited to see more of the 4001 "Geddy Lee" bass too.

The 5-string Paul made for me out of the 2007 4003 has one of the best-sounding B-strings I've had the good fortune to play, so I really thank him for his hard work. The narrow string spacing is also something I am finding extremely comfy and the neck has taken to the higher tension like a champ. Great work Paul.

Yep, that's the color. Looks just like mine except for the dings and chips... Oh, and that one's got checker binding...

Gonna have to add checker binding when I refinish mine...
