Thanks for the compliments on my '72 guys. Yes it does have checkered binding. Just a bit hard to see due to size of the pic.

When the Smith book came out I was still at Voltage Guitars, and we owned the 1963 MapleGlow 4001 on page 203 of his book. Anyone know who currently owns that bass?

I thought there was a discussion on a 63 MG 4001 for sale a few years ago, that I thought could have been that MG 4001 bass. I'll have to look through my archives to try and find it.
