It's kind of funny that you'd bring that video up. I actually know George Gobel. We used to hang out in the same crowd when I was going to Purdue! The LOX thing you see there is at the annual HKN (EE Honor Society) picnic. That happened a few years after I had graduated so I never got a chance to partake in that particular bit of insanity...johnallg wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBLr_XrooLscjj wrote:Yeah, but it heats up fast. Most interesting! I remembered seeing that video many years ago when he had it on the Purdue Physics site, then it moved to his personal website. I was surprised (well not really) to find it on Youtube. Hilariously insane!cjj wrote:It's kind of funny that you'd bring that video up. I actually know George Gobel. I wondered why the case felt light when I put it away!jps wrote:... Shhhhhhh, the 4002 is in the trunk of the car.
BTW, although I myself have done some foolish chemistry 'experiments' in the past, I have to say that the YouTube video with the liquid oxygen is probably the most foolhardy thing I have ever seen ... there could have been a serious disaster there (fortunately there wasn't).

But wait: isn't liquid oxygen REALLY COLD?
It's amazing that the metal grille melts while the briquettes have yet to burn away.

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I would have expected little piles of ash. I suppose it all burned so fast the charcoal didn't have time to burn through.bassduke49 wrote:But wait: isn't liquid oxygen REALLY COLD?![]()

Re: NAMM 2010
It has to do with surface area and volume of material. Once the metal gets hot enough, it too will burn in the oxygen rich environment. There's not a whole lot of metal there to burn, but lots of area. The charcoal will only consume oxygen on the surface and will take a while to burn through.
Of course, if the LOX managed to soak into an unlit briquette, thus completely saturating it with oxygen, once it hit ignition temperature, it would likely oxidize almost instantly - explode. That's one reason that this stunt can be extremely dangerous...

Finally got a chance to download pictures and do some editing of red eye, darkness and contrast, etc.
I will try to post pics that are not the same as others posted... some different perspectives of NAMM...

Some of the stuff at the Vox exhibit.... AC-30 fans will be happy to know that after many years of a poorly planned setup,
they finally moved the tubes to the back of the chassis ... so now you can change tubes without having to perform major surgery !!! Also note the new top panel of the new AC-30 and the methodology to use a small connector cable to "blend" channels and beef up the overdrive or whatever tone you want without having to change the settings.
Now if only somebody at Vox would figure out how to do this with a foot-pedal switch instead of plugging 1/4 jacks in and out ....
