In my early days, some of us practiced in a basement but we had lotsa room. We had a lightbulb in the middle of the room with a long string on it. Well, the upshot was, we put a roach clip on the string. We may not have sounded too good, but we got real good at passing the clip around. we could even do tricks like sending it behind the next guy so it would land in the next to the next guy's hand. I know, cut it with the old hippy stories!

"That sound arena room looks nice and spacious. Is that a common thing for bands in CA - do you rent them out for band practices?"
Yeah, these places usually have several rooms in each complex to practice in. They offer drums and amplifiers, but many players bring their own gear. The rooms vary in size and you pay different rates for different size rooms. Some rooms are a pretty good size and some also have one large room with a stage that they call the "Showcase" room. There are rehearsal studios in and around the NYC area that are like that also.

back in the 70s I played with a guy who had some bucks and we rehearsed in a room that was bigger than most bars ... it had a stage and a high ceiling ... on the opposite wall was one big mirror ... this type of a room is good for touring acts to perfect their on stage show ...

Thanks guys. Everyone that's in a band I know uses a Sound Arena or a similar place. There aren't too many homes in Southern California with basements, not that anyone could even afford a home out here. The median home price in the town I live in is $650,000!

Fortunately I have a spare bedroom, and that's where my band practices. We've been to sound arena a few times, but I hate their guitar amps, I'll tote my own and that's not fun. But that's where we took the inner picture for our CD, the "showcase" room at sound arena, Reseda.
