Well Paul, having actually LIVED in Poland (and other Baltic countries) for several years I can tell you that when they are cured they don't turn red exactly but they DO turn a sort of pink.

I'm not a scientist, but for some reason other fish flesh also turns a slight pink when smoked, eel for example.

Like a lot of very old expressions, one can't take them completely literally. Saying "pink herring" probably didn't sound very good, so it was "red" herring.
After all, people with "red" hair don't really have RED hair, it's sort of an orange.

Isn't there a drink call Cherry Herring? That would be appropriate in this case.

Paul, normally I'd take you up on that offer, but I have a feeling that this 75th colour might look kind of cool, too, so I'm gonna hold off, okay? Shame about the silver guards, though. They would like quite spiffy.

I searched "Cherry Herring" on Google. Some lovely recipes, but no colours.

I'll turn it over to the rest of you now, but in the meantime, I'm gonna start brainstorming ways to get an MLAT warrant to have the feds seize paint samples from the Rickenbacker factory. I have ways of making them talk. [Insert dastardly laugh here.]

Yes there is, John.

2 quarts sour unpitted cherries
2 cups of sugar
1 750ml bottle 100 proof bourbon

Mix cherries, sugar and bourbon in a one gallon glass jar. Keep in a cool, dark place for a minimum of one year and shake weekly (could be the drink, you or both). Serve chilled, preferably at Christmas time.

Count me in with the group that's not going to be clamouring to get in line for just a color change and commemorative plastic pieces. I, like Mr. Doseck, had been wishing for something extra like checkered binding. That doesn't mean a new rick isn't in my future as the recent changes are definitely a step in the right direction. Anyway this will free up some money for what I really want, a '73 with checkered binding(probably small inlays) refinned to azureglo( umm-yummy).

I just want to clarify that I mean no disrespect for Mr. Hall and his efforts to give us something to appease the followers for the 75th anniversary. He stated very clearly at the beginning of the year that there was no "special edition" coming, and binding or other appointments would in effect make the bass(or guitar) just that.

Well I'm not going to make a decision now, I am waiting to see what is offered. If it is a color only I may like it.

The cherry brew is called "Cherry Heering". Dutch, apparently. It is commercially available (hic), but probably not as good as Aitch's home brew, which I would think is the real gold standard!

For what it's worth - An inside eye witness reports to me that the 650 that Slick played on the 21st was "sort of blonde colored." As I said, for what that's worth.

John Hall also presented the band (Paul) backstage with a RIC 12-string acoustic.
