Let's bid adieu to our poor misunderstood friends on Madison Avenue with this sterling specimen of advertising genius from our innocent days of yesteryore. As stupid as it is, I hunted it up after 47 years just to make everybody wince, so that just proves that these boys really knew what they were doing all along ...
Sorry, I respectfully disagree...his voice isn't what it was when he was young, but whose is? Even in the clip Jeff posted, I wouldn't call it 'terrible', but this is the voice we're discussing here:
...wish my voice were that terrible...

Anyway, moving on...I've been meaning to post this next one for a while. It's currently my favorite youtube clip. Who says ritualized tribal hatred can't make for amazing entertainment? This is a video some young guy edited down from his parents' footage of their trip to India. The actions depicted are those of the daily flag ceremony and border closing at the India/Pakistan border. It's made even more fascinating by the editor's addition of a soundtrack: a cut from the band Balkan Beatbox called 'Bulgarian Chicks' (featuring vocals by Feat Vlada Tomova and Kristin Espeland). I love all the characters, but my favorite is the big Paki guy with the beard...man, 'if looks could kill'. There's just so much going on here...among other things, the remnants of Empire are quite apparent in the British style of saluting, swinging the free arm while marching...and most of all, the stamping of the foot when halting, which has been magnified to a gigantic gesture of murderously defiant disrespect when directed at the adversary. Also of note: check out the end, where a member of the Indian honor guard attempts to go into the 'full monty' while saluting his camo-clad superior, and the C.O. gestures for him to forget about it, as if to say 'Knock it off, we're done, let's go have a beer'...
Of course, all this gloriously ritualized violence would constitute nothing more than great theater if nukes were not involved...

Forgot to mention one of the scarier, more impressive elements of that clip...notice that the automatic weapon the Indians are so casually throwing around has a 'fixed' bayonet...yikes. Don't try this at home...

using the word Terrible was a bit a strong and on hindsight I could have chosen something better. Thomas Dolby put out a great song in the 80's I remember watching that video when i was a little kid. In all likeliness he's just lost his voice with age. But that brings up the question, when is it time to hang it up?

A very good point, David, and it also brings up the fact once again that life isn't fair...we want to hear the lovely high voice of the younger Thomas and feel cheated out of it...whereas Leonard Cohen, whose voice sounds like a rusty hinge on the Gates Of Hell, has no trouble pleasing the crowd as much as ever he did...

What makes the Indian Honor Guard clip even funnier is the fact that those guys are actually being serious about what they're doing.
I don't know, I have the strange feeling that someone spent way too much time watching (and misinterpreting) Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks sketch...
