Stained the head wings, or replaced with walnut?

Wow! Very nice. It must be one of the last original basses made with the walnut headstock wings and 1/4 inch neck PU spacing. Are the inlays fully extended crushed pearl? Checkerboard binding?

Mark, sorry to disappoint - I painted the headstock sometime before '75 - saw a picture and thought it looked neat. Binding solid white. I think it is 1/2 inch for the PU spacing. Quickie pic (I think I botched the scale) you can see the inlays are full (E to G string)- appear to be crushed pearl, not glittery thou. All orig equipment except for the strap pegs and the strings.

Nice bass Tom. "Full width" actually means that the inlays extend past the E and G strings, to the very edge of the fretboard. You have normal, poured (non crushed pearl) inlays.

Thanks John. OK, so neck binding to neck binding is full. What would the material be here? Thanks for the education - you guys are great!

Still a great looking bass - I'm sure it sounds great, too.

Check out the thread "73 Sparkle Inlay Timeline", it's one of the top four threads on the page as of right now. There are pics there of what full-width inlays actually look like.

I'm not sure of the material used on your bass, but i'm sure somebody else is!

Hi Mark, Thanks and yes I think it sounds great. Stereo or mono it has served me well since 74. Not as creative or as striking as some I have seen (your 'Harley' post for example) but I like it.

John - yes I went looking after your post and saw that. Thanks! Are these great instruments or what!!

Off to make noise now - Thanks again.

Hey Tom - I actually do have some stock Ricks in my collection. This 1968 4001 is only sporting newer frets - everything else is 100% original. It's my favorite bass to record with. When I saw your 74 MG, it reminded me a lot of this one.

As a humble guitarist loitering in the bass section, may I say those 68's are stunning basses.

No wonder you're all screaming for a reissue model!
