I have a code for 40% off on this site and i've been thinking about getting one of these straps in black. I have a nice Levy's leather strap, but I really like the minimalistic elegance of the design here.

Thanks Rich. That I am - I have Frankenberry, Booberry, and Count Chocula on my T-shirt!
I'm a Cheap Trick fan so I've always used the checkerboard strap. The one in the photo was this first one I ever got, which was back in high school. I drove almost 2 hours to get it at a store that was a Hamer dealer.

What I want to know is, how do you play with the guitar slung that low? I can do it with the SG, but the position of the strap button on the horn changes the way the 480 hangs and I have to hike it up a bit, otherwise it becomes increasingly difficult to play barre chords past the 9th fret.

Yeah, the coolness factor is one thing, but slung low does present barre chord challenges in the upper reaches.... found that out playing barre-chord centric songs like Kiss' Rock and Roll All Night and Strutter and Steve Miller's Jet Airplane with my low-slung WB on the 4th of July !

At SCARF, I was letting Scott's 11-year old son Spence use the 480, so I had to assist Spence shorten the strap, when we switched off guitars a couple of times. If you think the 480 was low slung on me (at 6'4" height) you should have seen that checkered strap swimming on poor Spence when he first tested it out !!

I think Spence definitely likes the 480 !!

Since I was a kid I slung the guitar low so maybe I'm just used to it. I do sometimes teeter it up at an angle though. Being tall I've always been a bit self-conscious if it rides a little high. In fact, I think I'll be parting with my 620 FG as it looks like a student guitar on me. But also, being a fan of Townshend and Rick Nielsen who sling it low, maybe that's where I got it from. And look at Jimmy Page, Joe Perry....I'm sure there's others.

Yeah, i'm not referring to how it looks, I literally cannot play with it that low. The lower it gets the more uncomfortable it becomes to play up the neck.
Here's where I like it.

It's all about where you're comfortable. I saw a guy that was mainly a jazz player but could really shred it up. But because he's so used to playing while sitting down and crunching a bit over the guitar, when he stands up with a strap it's so short it's right under his neck! But the guy can rip it so well you really don't even notice it - you're more focused on his ability.

Yeah - you're hardly likely to walk up to a jazz fusion master who's playing like an alien, and say "y'know .. you should wear your guitar lower".

I like to leave my guitar straps at different lengths. Keeps me guessing a bit!

I have my strap set not George Harrison high, but not death metal/punk rocker low, either. It's hard to describe unless you see me wearing one of my straps in person.

Anyway, to get on the topic of 480 models...Rich, your 480 is something else. It's got a bright color (score 1), loud pickups (score 2) and is unique (score 3). It sure had a lot of interest at SCARF and looked brand new, you really cleaned that thing up!

Thanks Jake. Glad you enjoyed playing it. Everyone who tried it out seemed to like it. Those early 70s edition High Gains really have some punch !

Regarding cleaning it up ---- I'll never understand why anyone would put stickers on a new refinished paint job, on a thirty-eight year old Rickenbacker !! Why get it refinished ? As much as I polished it, I'm afraid that some sticker residue will always be there, when held under the light in a certain position. Oh, well.
