Does anyone know if the "horns" on this GS 4001S Special are sanded down like they are on the 4001 C64S? It doesn't look like it.

Why would they be? This is not a Macca tribute bass.

GC calls it a McCartney Right Handed Tribute on their web site but there is no reverse headstock (obviously) and no zero fret which is fine with me because I don't like those C64S features. I picked up one of these up a couple of weeks ago and it's a gorgeous instrument. The whole thing has a matte finish including the fretboard and headstock. The body is a beautiful figured maple which has to be seen to be appreciated. It has waves in the grain which almost have a 3D look to them. It was worth the money for me cause I always wanted a V64 and I'm a huge McCartney fan. Mine is perfect - no flaws whatsoever.

Congratulations John. This sounds like a great bass. Thanks for your report. I look forward to your Band On The Run cover.

I think the bass with the broken latch on the case ended up at Olivia's Vintage. Looks like it's been sold in the last few weeks.

I own one of these, bought it last spring. From what I can by tell by the serial numbers, mine is was the 24th one made in the run. It's a great bass.

GC Sacramento still has one hanging on their wall since they first came out. Still asking full list price.

I picked one up on clearance at GC in Portland last month, typical Ric quality with a few minor flaws and it needed a few tweaks of the truss rods but now that its dialed in, its a BEAST! Easily one of my favorite basses I've owned. I'm 100% satisfied with mine. According to Ric customer service they were made along side other Ric basses and there is no official count of the 50 in the run

That is true. RIC does not officially release production numbers.
However - volunteers on this site track sales info online and a number of them were added to the RRF register as collected items.
They were made week 13 of 2014 and the serial number range seems to be 14 13750 to 1413799. We have 34 of the 50 made registered so far. The SNs were on the Guitar Centre Platinum website which does not seem to exist anymore.

If you register yours there will be one more there.

I'll have to post a pic off my PC at a later date, its throwing an error when I try to do it on my phone. Mine is 13750. So guessing by those estimates its '#1'
