Sure Ted, my pleasure. I have a weakness for red basses! My first bass was a 63 CAR jazz. I actually got the FG by accident. I had a maple glo originally but we couldn't get the action adjusted properly. So the dealer took it back and gave me the only other 4003 he had in stock. What a great guy!
I now prefer the Rics over Fender. They just have a more versatile sound and I find the neck easier to play. Got a Hofner too and it's a beauty! BTW, this bass sounds fantastic recorded right into a board.
Know what you mean about the smell, mine still has it over a year later. It's my main player!

Yes I have a V63 horseshoe in her, and the neck is thinner than the later 4003 necks, closer to that on my '67 4005WB but just a bit chunkier.
"The gap between the vintage shoes is larger than on the reissue pickups"
That is primarily because of the shape of the shoes. I wish the shoes were shaped like those on the real vintage HS pickups. The exposed portion of those shoes were angled up to clear the arc of the strings better than the reissue shoes do, in other words, the top and bottom of the shoes are not parallel. I plan on having the shoes on mine reshaped to better match the old ones. Jared and I have gone back and forth on this detail for his "Nakanishoes".
