..... according to Guru Mark Lewisohn (The Beatles LIVE!), they did not play at all on April 2, 1963. Lewisohn does have them playing at Azena Ballroom on Feb 12, so that web site is wrong. In that pix, the guy at the mic is Peter Stringfellow.
The Beatles made their Sheffield debut at the Azena Ballroom, White Lane, Gleadless, Sheffield S12 during a break in their tour with Helen Shapiro. They appeared there on February 12 1963. The promoter who had booked the group was Peter Stringfellow. Originally he had booked them to appear at St. Aiden's Church Hall, where he usually held his dances. However, due to the growing popularity of the Beatles, the police advised Stringfellow to alter the venue and select larger premise so he transferred the dance to the Azena. The Zena is now a Kwik Save.
Two other 1963 gigs in Sheffield:

If this isn't the single greatest photo of Lennon ever taken, I'd sure like to see what is.

Yeah, very cool! The un-modded 325 sets the date for us.
I know this "WORST BEATLES SONG" thing has been done before.... but still.... IF YOU'VE GOT TROUBLES has got to be the worst of all the seriously recorded Beatles songs
(I dont count the off-the-cuff noodling around in the Get Back sessions)

Zooming in on the picture above..... RIngo was playing the Dakotas' drums.
The Croydon gig was part of a 'Merseybeat Showcase'
The Beatles play the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, on April 25th 1963. This was part of the 'Mersey Beat' tour one month after the release of their first album 'Please Please Me'. Also on the bill was Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Big Three, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas (Ringo played their drum kit) and Vic Sutcliffe. John Leyton was supposed to be topping the bill but he didn't appear due to illness, so The Beatles topped the bill.

I can't help but wonder if as they're trudging around the U.S. in '66 they're thinking 'We just recorded Eleanor Rigby, Tomorrow Never Knows, She Said and I'm Only Sleeping. Why are we on a baseball field in the Midwest playing 'Rock and Roll Music' to 10 year olds?'

I think you nailed it right on the head..... and when they went through the Manilla craziness, that was pretty much it.... George very nearly quit the band after that fiasco.
