haha! If Itake out the bridge pickup on my 4003, I'm greeted with Maria.....in big capital letters that fill the whole pickup route.

No such like with my 4001 tho......the only name i can find on that one is Mike.....scribbled in the control cavity.

Mike,,,,,hmm........doesnt quite work somehowImage

Think of Mike as short for Mickey or Michelle.

I got the neck set up nice and straight on my Claudia now and it plays very nice. After fiddling a little bit wth the pickup heights she can get a very nice classic Rick sound, with the bridge PU higher than the neck PU.

One thing I will rewire for sure is the volume control; when the control is fully CCW hum increases indicating that the center tap is connected to the selector switch as the load of the potentiometer is across the input of the amplifier in that wiring configuration. Connecting it so the center tap is attached to the hot terminal of the output jack will short the input to the amp when the volume control is turned down all the way, hence no hum. This is the proper way to wire a volume control when there is only one as in this case. With two volume controls they must be wired the way it is currently, otherwise if one volume is turned down you lose all output.

Of my seven basses and two guitars this is the only one with a name and that's because it made itself known to me as I was adjusting her. The others will just have to be called by what they are: Twangy, Jazzy, Cedar, Zonhead, Decap, Blacky, Ashley and Quilty!

"Hi, I'm Claudia and I'm yours".

That was really a nice personal touch!

Maybe Claudia is one of them here?

Is that John Hall I see in the upper right of the photo, at two-o'clock, next to the post?
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Yes, Peter.
I think he wanted the great RIC craftspeople, instead of himself, to be in the soptlight and be appreciated.

blue star ... that is a reference to Star Stowe posing for playboy with Gen Simmons azureglo 4001 ... I don't name my basses but if I did that would be the way to do it ...

I call them Rickenbacker or fender or Schector or ... well you get the idea ... but I have a good friend who collects prs guitars and names them ... to each his own ...

I remember that playboy photo of Star Stowe with the AZ 4001 from when it first came out in 1977, come to think of it that was the year I bought my first Ric bass, coincidence?
They auction these off all the time on Ebay.
I call them my 78 4001, my 96 4003, or my blue one or my black one, etc.

Hey Jeffrey, My serial# is 03 24110 with a Production date 06/03.

This is actually very interesting. Back in the late May I exchanged a few e-mail with JH and he told me that the 4004's were going to the woodshop in about 3 weeks - which would have made it June. I guess the production date is when they actually begin production. Interesting how the bass hits the woodshop in June and finally ships in October. That's roughly 16 weeks give or take one or two - I didn’t think it took that long to produce one of these babies. But I guess quality can’t be rushed!

Thanks JH for your honesty with me, and a great product!

Oh by the way! My bass came with chrome screws for the TRC. I called Tommy at RIC, sent him the pic of the headstock I posted here and when I got home today from germany the gold screws were in the mail. Thanks Tommy!

cheers

More news! There is a letter C in the cavity under my TRC. And while I had the screwdriver out, I decided to open the back cover to see what is back there and you can clearly see that the walnut runs through the bass, it’s not a laminate like the catalog says. Maybe I don’t understand what they mean by laminate!

Cheers!

It is a laminate in the sense that they laminate the three pieces of wood together in a sandwich. Yours is a triple decker, mine's a double. Image
