Tim:

It was not a limited edition with a certificate that numbered each instrument like the McGuinn, Petty and Lennon ones, so it has no official number. But based upon the SN, yours looks to be the first one assembled of the batch at least.

This is the earliest we have collected 14 13751 (spotted in California via their website)
http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... 6order%3D5

And this one is 14 13799 collected out of Vermont.

They are basically a repro V63 bass with a matte finish. (What makes them unique and special I think is the finish). As RIC is once again making S basses again (and cheaper then a standard 4003 to boot) its value is subjective. There was much grumbling at the time your bass came out that GC (who had set the retail price not RIC) had priced them very high. Still they seem to have sold most of them. So who knows?

I would say you are lucky to have one.

I know it's not technically a numbered edition, but the warranty card does list it as a "Guitar Center Special Edition".
The finish is a selling point to me , very unique for a Ric.
As far as price and 4003S, yes $3400 is too much, however I got mine at less than I see a lot of people asking for their V63's. You might be able to score a 4003S for $1400-$1500 but by the time you buy a toaster and if you can find a horseshoe you are close/over $2000 not to mention the upgraded case and the truss rod cover.
So yeah.
The satin maple finish puts it over the top for me, at >$2500 it's a no brainer for me

For those interested, it looks like there's one up on Ebay. It's listed as a C64.

Yes I wouldn't mind grabbing one of those, taxes are coming back soon but the wife might have a different idea.

Was looking at the photos, seems like very high string action, and the tailpiece already lifting. Hopefully the strings on it aren't too heavy....
It's a nice looking bass, and not a bad deal at that price,(BIN $1998.15) presuming the neck isn't wonky.

Action on mine can be adjusted super low and it plays great with 1.05 Rotosound 66's. As far as the bridge tail lift, same issue as any modern Ric 4001/4003

I sold my GC 4001S a few weeks ago. It was a really nice bass and sounded great, but my FG 98 v63 had been my preferred 4001. But that too is about to change as I'm about to step back in time to April 1973.

Is the flux capacitor still on schedule to be delivered to you tomorrow Dane?

Well, not quite. After 9 years I finally accepted that I would never get it back so I did the next best thing I could to replace it (MD-1582). I found and bought MD-1593, also dark BurgundyGlo with all the same features as MD-1582 and probably made the same day as MD-1582 was back in early April 1973. Right now it's in Dane's hands. I have him making a repair to it. I should have it here by the end of the month. I'll post more details and a photo or two of it once I have it in my possession.

BTW, I had Dane make me one of his harnesses for my 4001S GC Special, and it took that bass from sounding very good to sounding fabulous. I highly recommend to 9c1ny or anyone with a 4001S GC Special to buy one of Dane's harnesses for their bass. They won't regret it. If I hadn't happened upon MD-1593, I would still own the 4001S.
