It's already been figured out at least twice, judging from what I've read and from what John Hall and Jeff Scott have said.

March 7th issue of Information Week page 71. IBM "Middleware is Everywhere" ad. Shows a pic of the inside of the Ric factory with numbers and a key. 1) JH in the window overseeing the factory. Key says "Endorsement deal e-mailed to agent." 2) Guy at back wall in front of some sort of equipment. Key says "IMs serial numbers to vendor, securely." 3) Lady in forgound soldering something. Laptop next to her. Key says "Staff shares updated model specs." 4) Guy in middle of floor holding a tablet pc. Key says "Production goals posted to team space." 5) Rack with about 8 new ricks in foregound, some 330s or 360s, a 4004 cii, and a 4003. Key says "New product launched in record time."

Cool add. Nice shot of the factory floor. There's the huge news. I wouldn't read into the "new product" thing. Most likely means sending new guitars out the door, not an entirely new model.

Hence all my cryptic stuff about "1, 2, 3, 4", and also about the "Oracle sitting in his high place, surveying the scene below".

Great shot of the inside of the Rick factory (well, final assembly area).

"Endorsement deal?" Since when has Rick done endorsement deals?

Artistic license, I guess.

Eric Kutzler quotes: "New product launched in record time."

Which product would that be? Please don't tell me it's the C series. Image

There's a higher rez scan over on Vox Talks. Still trying to figure out how this is possibly "hilarious"...

It's hilarious for a number of reasons, not the least of which is having me look out the window while sitting on an orange crate.

First, that was shot in our acoustic guitar factory area, not the electric factory- all of those guitars in the foreground had to be "imported".

Second, be assured none of our employees look like that (except me)!

Next, the text is rather funny as applied to us, although I'm disappointed that Adam took the low road to mention one point as he did.

Finally, if you saw what was involved to do this (10 hours, 45+ people) you'd laugh too.

Anyway, it's an interesting ad series for IBM, getting a bit out into the real, dirty world. As I understand it, this is ad #38 in the series, and the very last one before they move to something else.

I'm hoping the insertions on Monday in The Wall Street Journal and Network World are larger in size, maybe even in horizontal format. More detail would be visible then. What they showed me on the screen at the time of the shoot was slightly different than this one.
