Many times right here in town I've seen deer crossing streets up in my neighborhood, and a couple times I've seen 3 deer out by our sattelite dishes when I leave at midnight or so. The station is right in the outer downtown area of the city. My daughter reported deer on the American University campus in Washington DC!

Two nights before I moved from NY to CA, I almost hit a deer as I got onto the Bronx River Parkway (the BURP)in Yonkers. Occasionally a deer makes it's way into Manhattan. I don't know how they get across one of the bridges without anyone seeing it. Maybe they swim across a river. I don't think a deer has lived in Manhattan in at least 100 years.

Howard - don't forget the left-handed smoke shovel, the blinker fluid, Kanuter valve, and belt stretcher while you're picking up the striped paint.

And here in central IL, the deer are as thick as squirrels. Especially now as they start to move around much more.

Howard, have you hit anyone yet while driving on the wrong side of the road? It is sort of a sport in the bay area of California.

I was in a car that hit a deer when I lived in PA. The deer was dazed, but eventually got up and ran away. The car was smashed. The grill and both headlights were destroyed. I had to hang out the passenger-side window holding a flashlight so we could make it home.

No worries about the skunks Howard. I have a family living under the front porch, 2 raccoons live in tehgarage with several squirrels, a ground hog family under the back porch... Hey! In fact I have the cast of Over The Hedge living in my yard!

THe skunks are great, as long as you don't startle them. Mama brings the young 'uns up on the porch each night. I can sit quietly and they'll come right up beside me. And no, neither they nor I smell. That I know of...

They keep the local teen gang from hanging out in the driveway next door.

I too have been involved in a car/deer accident. It was the last day of hunting season and it was the first deer I saw that season.

Back in 1977 a friend of mine hit a moose near Hudson Hope BC (sometimes referred to more correctly as Hudson's Hope). Anyway on with the story, my friend rounded a corner pushing the envelope of safe winter highway speeds when all of a sudden a moose stepped out in front of him.

He had no choice but to hit it, as all the other choices meant certain death for him at least.

The moose careened over the top of the hood (bonnet for Aitch) and took the roof right off the top of his 1975 Ford Bronco as he was ducking for cover behind the wheel, while firmly applying the brakes.

Long story short, the moose got up and after a wobbly start walked away. I had to go out in the middle of a very frigid night up a dark unlit highway to rescue my friend.

In this case it's a good job he ducked under the dash or his head would have been torn off as well.

Yeah, skunks are nice and don't smell while they're calm, but my Mom told me when a car hits the skunk about a mile from their block of apartments in Bay area... well, ya get the drift.
