Thank you all.

Believe me, that was my first thought. It was quite easy to finger and so nice to have superb intonation right out of the box. There's a thread here about dead spots on C 8-9-10 but I sure didn't hear any such thing on this one. Because it's so nice to play it was more a like a assistant than a hurdle, not that the Yamaha is exactly an obstacle but it's clearly not my friend. Not in the same way.

I've only been dinking around when it comes to bass, up to this point - and that's a generous assessment. My fear is that every time I handle a fine instrument, it's another opportunity for a ding. I've had this Yamaha SBG3000, ivory color with all brass appointments, for about 25 years. It's not really the best sounding guitar, and it will pull your shoulder out of joint if you stand all night long, but I've never seen another like it and it's near and dear to me. That's why I always put it back in the case when I'm done playing and why I instinctively did so when one time when the doorbell rang, but failed to latch it. Yes, I did do what you might think. I came along later and, because I ALWAYS latched the case, picked it up briskly and out flew the guitar...

...pirouetted...

...and impacted the sharp metal corner of a decorative knick-knack wagon serving as a plant stand. I was in shock. I put it in the case and didn't look at it for two years. Seriously. One day I got my nerve up and pulled it out. Not a scratch. Perfect. Plays great. Now, dig this: I swear on any arbitrary sacred cow of your choosing, there was a huge dent near the lower cutaway when I put it up.
Like a fine Martin acoustic, it will get better with age. And it will become a part of you like another limb! Congrats on the new bass!
I'm glad to hear it, and I've really got to take this to heart, since it feels so good.

I have a jazz tutorial book by Rick around here, somewhere, that I bought decades ago. I saw Rick only once, in 1972 with the MO as a double bill with them and FZ&TMOI. 8)
here's a favorite: Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant.
I saw Ray in 1975 with GG, I was right at the front edge of the stage and have some great 35mm slides of the band, once again, somewhere around here, packed away.
Oh man, I'm quite envious, both shows. I didn't get to go to concerts until about '77, and unfortunately didn't latch on to Gentle Giant until they'd already hit the pop stage. Now, with Youtube, I've got to attend (lo-fi) concerts I would have loved to have seen. I'd go see Three Friends, even, but it's not the same. (I missed Dweezil the other night, and that's the closest I'm ever going to get to Frank).

I saw Dweezil last fall when he was touring along with RTF. 8)

Some of my faves:

Joey Spampinato - NRBQ

Ray Schulman - Gentle Giant

Glenn Cornick - Jethro Tull

John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin

Oh, can't leave out the main man; Paul McCartney!

I saw Dweezil last month, and his father 3 times in '84. I think Scott Thunes was on bass at the time. Dweez opened the second set as a power trio with Apostrophe ('). Jammin bass solo.

Yeah, Scott would have been the bassist during that period.

I only saw Frank one time, in 1972, and the Mothers did the Apostrophe (') album in it's entirety. 8) This was two years before the album came out on the market. :!:

I also saw Dweezil last month. I don't know who the bassist, or ANY of his supporting players was/were.
I really don't think it was Scott--wish it had been--but whoever he was.... he was excellent!!!!!!

As big a fan of FZ as I am, I wish to God I had the chance to see him---never was able to

+1. I like Duffy's playing too. There's something concise and accessible about it. ... if that makes any sense.

I'm going to throw in another shout-out to Graham Maby. I recently watched some concert footage of the Joe Jackson band in action in 1979 or 1980, right around the time of the release of "I'm the Man". Maby's bass is the heart of the band's sound and his playing is top-notch.

Ric Fierabracci is getting put up on my list of favorites. Great bassist, super nice guy. He's a member here, but he just lurks, unfortunately.

That´s one of the coolest names ever, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond. Before him there was Glenn Cornick playing bass in Jethro Tull.
