Interesting, I think it sounds great as-is , it can sound better?! What does Danes harness do? Act a booster of some sort?

Well, not quite. After 9 years I finally accepted that I would never get it back so I did the next best thing I could to replace it (MD-1582). I found and bought MD-1593, also dark BurgundyGlo with all the same features as MD-1582 and probably made the same day as MD-1582 was back in early April 1973. Right now it's in Dane's hands. I have him making a repair to it. I should have it here by the end of the month. I'll post more details and a photo or two of it once I have it in my possession.

BTW, I had Dane make me one of his harnesses for my 4001S GC Special, and it took that bass from sounding very good to sounding fabulous. I highly recommend to 9c1ny or anyone with a 4001S GC Special to buy one of Dane's harnesses for their bass. They won't regret it. If I hadn't happened upon MD-1593, I would still own the 4001S.

Congrats!! :)

Among other things, I'm actually restoring the harness in TD's bass using the internals from new CTS pots that are matched in pairs, and are very close to original spec. I'll also be replacing the original Cornell-Dubillier yellow caps with NOS originals due to the condition of the originals. The pics I'm taking as I work are too large file-wise, so perhaps TD will post some resized versions.

Yes, it is very much, even though I was hoping you found your old one. 8)

Here's a photo that Dane took of my bass on his workbench having just installed a horseshoe p/u. I'm going to have a brand new horseshoe surround available for anyone interested at a great price.

Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. Now back to the topic of the 4001S GC Special.

Nice, did you finally recover your stolen 4001 or is this a different one?

This is a different, but nearly identical bass 11 serial numbers away from the stolen one.

To bad about the stolen one, I've always kept an eye out for it. "Eggplantglo" is my all time favorite finish.

Mike Parks at The Rickenbacker Page has a slightly used one in next to mint condition. It's not listed on his webpage but he has it because it was mine.

If you're interested you can contact him through his website.
