The Cii I "tried out" before I ordered a BBR was a jetglo. I don't remember the pickup spacing, but I did like it. It had a gouge to the wood on it and I'm not big on black, so I didn't buy it. The gold really offsets the black nicely, though.

It is interesting to see factory one-offs from the 80's 90's and 2000's however because so many great bass players used classic 1960's model Rickenbacker basses the rare variations of those basses seem to have more allure as they are more of a direct variations of a classic. It would be more shocking to see a classic 60's 4001 with an extra fret than it would be to see a new production one off Rickenbacker bass made of sold gold.

Well, I'm almost there! Does a '71 count?

How about a 'lefty' '71 with an extra fret?

Here's possibly the rarest version..

That's so cool, Andy!
Peter,
When was the lefty made? Feb '71?
It's hard to tell, but mine has some of the same maple figure, though not as nice as yours. Maybe they were from the same board?

Kevin, yes - KB February 1971.
You don't know how lucky you are to have that one Peter....
Yes I do, and so does John Leftybass!

I couldn't have imagined a lefty '63-'72 bass having a tug bar. That must make it rare, as Macca's 4001S had no tug bar!

Well, any lefty Rickenbacker from the 60's is Hope Diamond territory. As Pete is a lucky lefty bass owner, this is the centerpiece of my collection....sorry for the 'non-bass' content...
If a left-handed 4001 surfaced that was made prior to Pete's '71, it would be a huge shock to me and most others who follow that kind of stuff.
There is supposedly another 4001-S from the 60's besides McCartney's that was a lefty....still somewhere out in mysterious-land.....

Andy - who has that bass now? Is it one of yours? Our buddy in the CR emailed the owner about two years ago to make an offer on it, but never heard a response. I've seen some additional close-up pics of those unique outline inlays - trying to track them down now.

Mark...I don't know. It disappeared after being offered for sale. I believe the seller withdrew it. Those inlays, or "outlays' are very cool...
Talking of rare lefty things from the 60's, how about the NOS mono wiring harness I picked up years ago from Scott Jennings on eBay...
Now, there aren't too many of them....

Yes a 21 fret early 70's bass surely makes the grade but that white 71 is super super super nice, thanks Andy
but then, i never met a Rickenbacker bass that is didn't like, so heres to the greatest musical instrument company of all time RICKENBACKER
