I bought the bass this way. I 'm not a fan of knobs. I was going to go passive with a 4004 style arrangement but found the pre-amp & controls way to useful live.

Rock, I remember the buildup of that bass on TalkBass. The guy really got flamed for wanting to mod his own 4001S, but it ended up sounding really cool.

I could 2nd guess his pickup choices all day long & the work it took to put in the bridge pickup but I like the way it sounds. In passive mode it almost sounds like a traditional Ric. In active mode it can get really edgy modern.

8-string necks are made in sturdy thicker than 4 strings. It can afford to the strength of the neck was removed sub-strings. It turns off most of the trouble of neck and sound faced by RIC BASS.

8-strings sets are expensive

Welcome to the forum, Kitchemon, but I hate to tell you that other than the headstock, hardware and how many strings it's made for, there no structural difference between a 4003S and a 4003S/8. When setup very carefully and properly with the lightest gauge 8 string set possible, the 4003S/8 will setup to sound and play well.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

I was irritated he chose to do it to a nice example of a 4001S instead of one that was already "pre-loved"... and then sold it. But it's true, he had every right to do what he did. And I don't have a problem with his mods at all, in fact I think some of them are pretty great.

Thank you for your feedback. I have never played the 4003S of four strings. I posted because I felt thick and always compared to 4001V63, 4001CS that I have.

I guess this one belongs in this topic as well. Originally a 4003 MID/BT/BH/FL, but now with an ebony board and painted matte grey.

The sound is a tad brighter than with the normal bubinga board. I guess the ebony stiffens up the neck a little compared to bubinga. Besides this it is the fretless I allways wanted to have. A Non-lacquered board on a Rick. :)
