Tell me about it! That's why I started this thread, I'm so confused.

I'm going to have to get that E Bay surround for my 67 project. Chances another coming up are practically zero. It could be a reissue, or the real deal...

From looking at all the photographic evidence I have seen in books and various places online, the surround does indeed look like the real deal from the '60s! None of the reissues have that severe a taper on the back part, it is just like Ken's surround.

I sniped in late at $312...only to have forgot to sign in....I am still pi**ed at myself!

I know for a fact the natural '63 4001 in Richard Smith's book was 100% original. We had that '63 at Voltage Guitars back in the mid-1980s. I remember it was still hanging on the wall in our shop when the book came out in '87, because I was the one who noticed it was the same instrument. Gotta love maple grain...

It was the cleanest, and one of the two most beautiful early 4001s I have ever seen. Not a screw out of place.

As soon as I get it I'll let you know if it's the real deal from the '60's.

It came today. Here are some pics I did today of the surround:








This is a real mid '60s surround. There is a lot of handwork on it and the taper is not symmetrical. Very cool! Overall it is in decent shape for it's age; I wonder where the rest of the bass is?

Nice work Jeff,i really thought Andrew was going to snag it for his [67]. It looks the same as mine ,try to find another one of those [needle in a haystack there]GOOD JOB still am skeptical of the 63 surround i believe its a re-issue

It does certainly look like a 60's part. Hard to believe it came off an early V or CS.

That might be the only one I EVER find to fully complete my 67 project.
Don't be telling me your going to put it on a 70's bass ..

'04 vintage, I would never consider putting it on a '70s bass.

Scott Doseck said it needs a vintage surround to make it complete!

I'll think about your project for a few days before I do anything as I have to admit I do feel a bit guilty. Nah!!! Well, maybe just a bit.

Here it is Jeff...Probably the rarest of 60's Ric basses. A domestic 4001S that was not even advertised by the factory for sale in the 60's catalogs. I'm needing some horseshoes and a toaster but that won't be a problem. Finding a period correct surround, that's another story...

Unless someone parts out a very early V which I believe had the 60's surrounds, it could be a long wait.
Now Jeff, do you really want an authentic vintage part on your 04 bass when you could be of great help in the completion of a very rare vintage bass...

If I sell it to you, you will have to come get it at the Confluence!

Andrew, I believe that if a pattern is made from the vintage surround that it could be transferred to a current V63 surround (about $75.00) which could then be re-cut and re-plated to match the original. While this would not be an original '60's part, it would at least be an original although modified RIC part that would make your bass look complete and correct.
Jeffrey, would you mind making me a tracing of your vintage surround,including the screw holes,on heavy paper or poster board so that I might do this for myself sometime in the future?
