However: recall that one of the last ones around sold to a guy who uses it as his primary (? - at least frequent) gigging guitar. (the Walkmen)

Well, I myself have had the experience of buying a guitar with one intent, and then after a while of really living with it finding myself using it alot more than I'd intended. I can certainly see a really nice vintage Rickenbacker becoming a "main" guitar, even if not really bought to be one. If it's the best you've got, and you're a serious player, it will have a way of staying in your hands!
