I got the pics today, too....it looks like a refin to me. It is very impressive!!
I have already backed away from this one, however.
I don't want to go through life having to wear a cup...

I constantly wear a cup Chris. You really do get used to it after while. It s the headgear that looks a bit nerdy all the time. I emailed the guy about the refinish because Mike told me the same thing. He hasn't reponded to that question yet, but he has to everything else. If I hear from him I will post it.

Chris,
Thanks for mentioning the cup idea. It never even crossed my mind to put one on. I have a C64 on order, so I might use your suggestion. The old hockey bag has been sitting there for 10 years, so I might as well put some of the equipment to use.
The day the bass comes in, I just pray that the cup does not runneth over!!

Well done Mike, the bass looks very authentic to me, check again the pics, you can clearly see the buckle ware and a small "peeled-off" area at the back of the body so I don“t think it is a refin.
The neck heel shape looks strange in comparison to both my 4000 and the one that sold on eBay about a month ago.

An early bass, but not a prototype; The strings anchor to the body in the 'normal' fashion for these 4000 basses, the VERY first and maybe a couple after that actually had a string anchor at the end of the body...the strings went past the bridge unit...check out the model holding one of these in the Smith book...

I see that now, Eduardo.....thanks! My '67 335's finish was almost identical to this one, with the slight peeling on the back....
Oh no....I am getting weak again....
Let's see....just where IS that cup?.....

This is just an observation, but the finish seems VERY shiny for a 1957 Rickenbacker, bass or otherwise. I am thinking that this bass should be finished in Nitro, and even most of the best-preserved 1957 Rickenbackers I've handled have a degree of checking in the finish....I'll look at the pics some more...

What does a cup have to do with all of this. You guys must wear your Ricks really low!

I think he has been very sincere. Like I said earlier he was shocked at the reponse to this auction.

Yes, and they are hard to find in any condition. Remember that the one Larry sold on ebay went for $4500 with a broken (but fixed nicely) neck, it was a '58. This bass does look like it has had a clearcoat added to it at some point IMO, I just can't get over how shiny it is....other than that and the odd tuner, it is a great piece.
