I'll probably have to replace this one some day...

I was quite surprised by how mellow sounding the horseshoe is on Ted's '63 4001.If Squire's is like that, he must have the treble really cranked on his amp!

Part of Squire's sound is in his picking technique. Geddy Lee uses a similar attack. One reason my bass might have sounded mellow is because a previous owner wired the tone pots backwards. When they are turned full on they are actually full off. One of many bass problems I will fix some day. If I play the '63 hard I can get very close to the Squire sound. The trick is a hard but controlled attack.

Ted, are you sure they were wired like that by a previous owner? It wouldn't surprise me if they came like that from the factory!

I wondered that but the pots are clearly replacements. Not very old ones either.

From what I saw of that control cavity, I am not surprised that it may be wired up incorrectly.

In that case you probably stand correct Ted. Nothing surprises from this period though. Check out this toaster cavity from my 64 deluxe...

I'm a little confused here. I understand JH wanting to protect the horse shoe, but what about the 4001 bridge? That is more identifiable as Ric than the horse shoe (IMHO) and yet I can get one easily from Allparts.

Surely if it wasn't licensed they wouldn't be allowed to make it OR sell it though?
