Well, with an upright, you get that fretless MWAH...

Uprights have the best bass tone going IMHO if you know how to play them, they are very articulate and are not all thump. They have a very rich tone. Hard to amplify however and keep that natural tone. They're a blast to play though once you get the stamina going, you can really beat on those things, they are very responsive to the way you play them.

oh yeah-

Even the plywood ones sound better now.

Beats a washtub with wire and shtick...

I played upright one year in college for orchestra. My first night playing I thought my fingertips were going to fall off or burst into flames. But afterwards my 4001 seemed very small, and easy to throw around.

I only had to do pizzacato a little, most of the time I had to bow it. And sight read bass clef...really wasn't all that hard to get used to.

Maybe someday... Image

I saw a band with a washtub a few months ago, they were actually pretty good. The used a stick though, no shtick at all.

No a real washtub bass, he has some wire thing for a string but I forgot what it was. They played on a college radio station right before my band.

I went to pick up a new set of Chromes and also picked up a set of D'Addario XL's and a set of D'A 1/2 rounds. Has anyone tried the 1/2 rounds. I think im going to try them first.

I use them on my Zon 5 string fretless, very close to RW sound.

I never like half rounds, seemed to be a bad compromise, they sounded like dead round wounds to me right out of the box. I don't remember the brand I used though.

I put the half rounds on last night, I could see how you say they sound like dead rounds, but they are a lot brighter then my flats, and still had a good bottom end like flats. I thought they were pretty bright sounding, but they did replace a 2 year old set of Pyramids. I'll see how they sound with the band tomorrow.

I've thought about trying them too at some point.
